Previewing the 2007 Oscar Season: Best Actress in a Leading Role
Most of the time the movies that you and I see at the movie theaters are the really big blockbusters while the movies that that get nominated for awards go by without most of the public even noticing them. Then when the Oscars roll around a lot of people are uninterested because the movies that got nominated are movies that they haven’t seen, or maybe haven’t even heard of. I’ve decided to help those of who would like to see some of these Oscar nominees ahead of time by previewing some of the movies and their actors that are coming up the rest of the year that could be up for award come Oscar time. Here are some of the possible nominees for Best Actress.
Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Cate Blanchett is a perennial Oscar nominee and she has been nominated before for the very same role. But does that help her chances since the Oscar committee likes her portrayal of Elizabeth or does it hurt her chances because it isn’t something new?
Charlize Theron, In the Valley of Elah
A month ago Charlize Theron might not have been as big a threat but the recent buzz is that In the Valley of Elah is really good, especially the performances of Charlize Theron and Tommy Lee Jones.
Halle Berry, Things We Lost in the Fire
Halle Berry may not have the best performance out of the group but Things We Lost in the Fire is a very Oscar friendly movie and the Oscar voters love voting on previous winners a second time.
Jennifer Connelly, Reservation Road
Jennifer Connelly has one Oscar win on her resume already and Reservation Road looks like a really good movie with a great cast. The only question is if this role is big enough to be considered a leading role, as the movie seems to focus on Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Ruffalo’s characters more than Jennifer Connelly’s character.
Keira Knightley, Atonement
Atonement is just about to hit theaters and therefore is the hot movie right now. The entire cast is getting great reviews including Keira Knightley. She seems like the favorite right now but that could just be because her movie is the most recent.
Nicole Kidman, Margot at the Wedding
This role seems like a different role for Nicole Kidman as she will be acting opposite Jack Black and while the movie is mostly a drama it has some comedic moments too. If Nicole Kidman can find a new comedic side then I’m sure the Oscar voters will reward her.
Meryl Streep, Lions for Lambs
In my Supporting Actress preview I mentioned that Meryl Streep could be nominated for a supporting role in Rendition. She could also be nominated for a leading role in Lions for Lambs. Lions for Lambs seems more like an Oscar caliber movie, but on the other side the Leading Actress category is more competitive than Supporting Actress. That is why Meryl Streep might slip to the Supporting Actress category.
These are all movies that are still coming up sometime the rest of the year but for this category don’t forget the first half of the year. Angelina Jolie and Keri Russell both got a lot of great reviews for The Mighty Heart and Waitress. If the Oscar voters remember them come voting time they could be among the nominees also.
